Accidents are scary stuff – they can really shake you, your passengers, and your motorhome. Because an accident in your caravan or motorhome is scary, we’ve put together a post to guide you through what you should do if you find yourself on the receiving end of a bump or knock and may need motorhome body repairs. This would be good to have a read of if you’re embarking on a long journey or holiday soon.

So, you’ve been in a motorhome or caravan accident. Here’s what you should do:

Check on yourself and your passengers

If your motorhome has been in an accident, check on yourself and your fellow passengers once the vehicle has stopped moving. Regardless of whether it was just a knock or something that is a little more jolting, you and your passengers might need some immediate attention (for example, if a seat belt is now too restrictive or a hot drink has been spilled). Make sure everyone is able to leave the vehicle safely once it has been pulled over or stabilised.

Move your vehicle to the side of the road

If you can move your motorhome to the side of the road safely, then proceed to do so. Only attempt this if it is safe, i.e. you’re not crossing multiple lanes of oncoming traffic to do so. Moving your motorhome out of the way of oncoming traffic (when safe) will help to minimise the chances of further impacts. Turn on your hazard lights or place any warning cones you may have near the vehicle to warn other drivers.

Exchange information with the other party

Exchange all necessary insurance and contact information with the other party involved in the accident, and take pictures of any damage if it’s safe to do so. Make sure you take as many details down as you may need – diagrams, notes, and photos will all add to your insurance appeal.

Call your motorhome insurance providers before you leave the scene

Make sure to call your motorhome  insurance providers at the scene of the accident. Tell them what happened and you’ll be given advice and information on how to proceed and they will talk you through the process. If you’ve been involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, Motorhome Body Repairs offer motorhome and caravan no-fault accident insurance. We will deal with the other party’s insurance company for you and arrange costs directly with them to relinquish the stress from you.
